Have you thought about what to consider when choosing a good health insurance plan?  We are faced with so many different options that we often find it difficult to know just what to look for. Keep in mind that the number one thing to remember as you begin your search for a good health insurance plan is this: never base your decision solely on what your monthly premium will cost. You first of all need to read the details of the health insurance plan you are considering.  This includes what your health insurance plan does and does not cover. Also you need to consider the in-network versus the out-of-network coverage as well as the costs of co-payment, deductibles, and coverage caps.

You first want to gain an understanding of the particular health insurance needs of your family. Ask yourself these questions: are you in need of coverage for just yourself, yourself and your spouse, yourself and just one child, or are you in need of a family health insurance plan? After making this determination see if you can assess the health needs of all those folks you intend to include in your health insurance plan.  This might be a wee bit trickier. These are a few questions you may need to ask: are you and the other folks you plan to include with your health insurance plan basically in good health? Do you know of any pre-existing conditions? Are any people you are considering covering with your health insurance plan ever in need of access to medical specialists or medical institutions?

If you know the answers to these questions you will then have a good starting point from which to decide what types of health insurance plans to try to target in your search for a good health insurance plan. Your next step will be considering your options. Are you being covered through a group insurance plan offered by your employer? If so, your health insurance options may be limited to the health insurance coverage that your company is offering. This may or may not make your decision easier. At the very minimum, you want to make sure you understand the difference between an indemnity plan and what’s called a managed care plan and its variations. These are the two basic types of health insurance plans that are offered today.

The first plan we will look at called an indemnity plan, basically offers those folks participating the freedom to choose where and when they will seek medical assistance. This freedom usually comes at higher out-of-pocket costs. However for many folks this is a fair trade off. The next plan called managed care plans, places many more restrictions on the participants and requires folks to use the medical professionals and medical institutions that make up the plan’s network. Folks participating in these managed care plans often need pre-approval for medical services that fall outside basic preventative care. The costs of healthcare in managed care services are usually lower than those found with indemnity plans. And for those folks and families who are 1) basically healthy, 2) don’t have a preference as to the doctor they see, and 3) are all in a tighter budget, managed care plans may be the better choice. This is a very basic look at the types of health insurance plans available. Further due diligence is advised.

Once you have chosen the type of health insurance plan, do you feel comfortable in choosing the right health insurance company? Many companies today you’ll  find, offer health insurance. These companies range from the well known corporate players that have been around for years, to the smaller, independent companies. As is the case when considering any major purchase, make sure you provide your due diligence in your research before arriving at a final decision. Talk to your friends, research on the Internet, and try to understand what you need to do when filing a health insurance claim.  This will provide you with the information you will find you need to assist you in choosing the correct health insurance company.

As always, seek the advice of a professional financial planner before deciding on a course of action that you do not fully understand.

  1. deductibles are what you pay before the insurance picks up the tab. Usually, after your deductible the insurance pays 80% and youpay 20% up to a specific amount. After that the insurance pays it all, unless and until you reach a 'cap'. Once you reach the cap, the insurance will pay nothing else, ever.

  2. I am an older Independent and am not at all for Senator McCain's program. It is very similar to a proposal that President Bush was running on his campaign platform back in 2000, that never went anywhere.
Having talked extensively with some professionals in the Insurance industry, they tell me that McCain's plan is very deceiving and convoluted.

To further my suspicions about his plan, today in the WSJ, it is explained by his campaign that one way he plans to pay for his health tax credit plan is to also cut Federal programs such as Medicare by some $1.3 Trillion dollars….
I am not at the point where I would invoke Medicare Benefits but I have family members who currently need that. There are so many seniors that need their Medicare benefits and he wants to cut them to pay for his medical plan..???….

  3. All good ideas.

I have a problem however with your righteous indignation at the end. I hate to live in the past, but where were all these great ideas during the last 8 years?

Call our president whatever you want, but maybe it takes a "socialist" to bring healthcare reform into focus. At least he's prioritizing it, which is a lot more than I can say for his opposition. When their backs are against the wall, they suddenly come up with great ideas…

I don't care who gets credit for any reforms, as long as we get some.

    peace

  4. what a stupid video defining india simply as “bollywood” and “spice and curry”.

    Thats so stereotypical and ignorant.

  5. Nice vid. You sure can cut the blank portion – you were able to put titles.

  6. Once I’m well settled & accomplished, I plan to adopt children from all over, but India is very close to heart, thank you so much for creating this video, hopefully this will inspire the close minded to reach out :)

  7. I watched the video n I cried hru it all! Im still cying now! I want so much 2 go 2 India! I want so much 2 adopt 3 Children! 2 Girls n 1Boy!Ive my own 3 Children. I want 2 go 2 India n bring home more children 2 join my 3 Children Ive got already. Where r all the Children? Y are they not being allowed 2 b adopted? Yet my heart breaks everytime I read about all the poor innocent baby girls being murdered just because they are baby girls! Yet there r soo many women whod die 2 become their mothers

  8. Obama is less of a troll than Hillary.

  9. please Google the phrase >

adoption is a complex and sensitive issue

    :)

  10. I have always wanted to adopt a little girl from India, I am 24 and within the next 3-6 years I will adopt her. So many children neep our help!! Heck I might adopt a boy and a girl!

  11. adoption is incredibly expensive. if they made it more affordable, more loving couples would be interested in adopting. I’m trying to adopt internationally, I’ve known many couples who’ve had to save up money 15+ years. It is quite hard.

  12. There has not been a reform mentioned that would cost me more than I already pay. Not even close. I choose Pelosicare.

  13. Obama is the one fining. I am shocked he did not deny it.

  14. What beautiful brown eyes, I have always wanted to adopt from india, when i’m old enough.

  15. i wish u well in ur effors!

  16. The one good thing about Chase's product: it's one of the oldest out there in a field of new, burgeoning HSA players, and they've probably worked out a lot of the kinks. I would recommend seriously looking at Chase or US Bank. Key Bank now offers HSAs as well.

An HSA can be good if you're not very sick. Don't forget to invest your money if you're not going to use it for healthcare purposes – you can move it around.

  17. Obama.

With McCain you are more likely to lose your health coverage as it will be a pre-existing condition and the insurance company would have the right to refuse to give you insurance. Your family won't be able to replace that insurance with the $5,000.00 tax credit which doesn't go to you but to the insurance company and you will be charged tax on any money that your husband's company pays to an insurance company.

With Obama, he wants to work on negioating better coverage for EVERYONE even those that stay on their company plans by not having the tax payers having to pick up the costs of emergency room visits for the uninsured. He wants to work with drug companies to reduce the costs of drugs too for those of us in the US. Seems strange that the same exact drugs sold here are just a fraction of the cost in Canada, Mexico and Europe.

Obama is definitely better for you and your family when it comes to medical coverage.
