Get Affordable Health Insurance While Unemployed
Posted by | Posted in Health Insurance | Posted on 10-07-2010

Affordable health insurance for the unemployed may feel impossible to find, but as long as you know where to look and have determination it is within your reach. Actually, self-employed individuals and individuals who are employed but aren’t offered employer-sponsored group health insurance can benefit from the much of the same advice.
The first step to finding affordable health insurance for the unemployed is to find out if you’re eligible for COBRA. The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 (COBRA) made it possible for individuals who are terminated, laid off, or transferring jobs to temporarily continue to receive group health insurance benefits. So, if you’ve just recently become unemployed for any of those reasons, referred to as “qualifying events,” contact your former employer for more information about your COBRA benefits.
The second step to finding affordable health insurance for the unemployed is to check into purchasing short-term health insurance. Short-term health insurance policies are designed with the unemployed person in mind, so rates are most likely within your budget. They can last anywhere from six to 12 months, so they’re perfect for individuals who are actively seeking employment or another form of affordable health insurance.
The third step to finding affordable health insurance for the unemployed is to contact your state’s department of insurance and request information about subsidiaries for which you’re eligible. Most states provide some form of free or low-cost health coverage for residents who meet certain income requirements. Some states even have special low-cost health insurance plans for people who can’t otherwise obtain health insurance. At the very least, you should find a free or low-cost health coverage program that will provide health care for your children, or assistance with special health care needs (i.e. diabetes, mental health, female health check-ups and conditions, etc.)
A change in your employment status doesn’t mean a change in your health needs. It may take some footwork, but it’s possible to find affordable health insurance for the unemployed.

Help answer the question about health insurance
How do health insurance premiums go down if private insurance is forced to cover preexisting illnesses?99% of the claims made in favor of the house health care bill are outright lies. It is amazing that people believe these things. Explain to me how if private insurance companies are forced to cover people with preexisting illnesses and not allowed to discriminate on a variety of factors, costs go down.

If you're eligible, file for COBRA benefits RIGHT AWAY. You may have to capitalize on the fact that your hubby had to leave his job for medical reasons. See link below.
That could tide you over for awhile.
Have your soon-to-be-ex go to human resources at his company to get the paperwork.
That will at least buy you some time.
It won't be cheap, but neither will finding your own coverage. If you have a lapse in coverage, you're out-of-luck, as the "pre existing condition" baloney can end up coming back to haunt you (yes, even with HIPAA).
Use the extra time to shop around for the best policy. Unless things have changed recently, UPS gives its part time employees benefits (a rarity). I think Starbucks (or some major coffee place) does that, as well. If worse comes to worse, do whatever it takes to get a job at a place where benefits either start on day 1 or start before your COBRA coverage ends.
In the meantime, alert your docs: particularly the neurologist. Work out a payment plan in advance for when your coverage ends, just in case you don't have other coverage by that time.
Best of luck to you,
~M~
p.s. In addition, now would be a good time to get rolling on appying for medication assistance. The income "line" drawn is pretty generous, and it is possible you would be eligible, now that your soon-to-be-ex's income will no longer count. If you get started NOW on filing for these sorts of benefits, they may kick in by the time you would need the. Go to pparx.org to start the application process.

It sounds like your priority is time with your family. Don't sacrifice that just for a paycheck. If you can apply for an unemployment extension, you should hold out for something that will allow you to spend time with your family. As long as medicaid is paying for your health needs, you should use this time to research the companies you want to target. That will make the decision-making much easier.
Any job that ends up costing you more in the long run is not worth it in the long run, if your not making enough to live on after deductions, is no job, it is free labor to the company that your working for, hold out for a job that offers more in the long run. You know the value of your skills and labor, why cheapen it by doing more for less? Yes the job market sucks right now, but there is your perfect job out there, you just have to go out and find it, cause it is not going to come find you.
that job isn't worth it in my opinion. you also got to think about how much you will be spending on gas, babysitter, etc. you will be spending more than making more.
This guy is funny I smoke pot and This guy is potatstic. My friends call me potking. I smoke pot. I like jamie kilstein . pot.
This is a tough position to be in. My main concern would be whether you would loose your unemployement check if they found out that you turned down a job that would have amounted to the same amount of money or more. I'm pretty sure they have the right to do that so be careful turning down a job.
I would personally contact the company and tell them that you would prefer to be considered for the job you want most first, and if they feel that you are not the best candidate for that you may consider taking the other job. If you have two job applications in with the same company it is not uncommon to call and talk to HR before accepting either. At least that way you can get an idea if you would be qualified for the better job before turning down the one on the table now.
Good luck!
I love how he says sh*t that needs to be said within his comedy. I’ve had this conversation with other people countless times.
It depends on what kind of reform is being proposed.
If the reform was to get rid of the FDA, phase out SS and Medicare, for example, I'd be all for it.
Reduce taxes and let the little guy have more money in the pocket so they're not dependent on the gobblement.
Wow, I remember when club owners told me I couldn’t give this guy open mic time in Chicago.
do what you think is best for you. no-one can really make a decission for you or judge you beacuse they don't know your position.
