Dental Insurance for Pets
Posted by | Posted in Dental Health | Posted on 19-10-2010

Pets too require dental insurance, just like the humans do. Statistics show that the dental illness and the money spent on dental treatments for pets are on par with humans. As a pet owner, the pet’s dental health is of prime concern as the pets can develop diseases of the liver, kidney, heart and other organs if their teeth are not taken care. Attention is required when the pet develops bad breath or swollen gums or red gums, or when seen with yellowish brown tartar crust, bleeding gums etc. The raising costs involved in treating such dental diseases of the pet calls for pet dental insurance. The pet dental insurance normally takes care of the routine check ups and cleaning procedures.
Normally pet dental insurance is required for dogs and cats as they have teeth. The costs towards dental cleaning may not be high and do not require any support for footing the bills. But if, a cavity is developed or any dental surgery is required, a cushioning by way of pet dental insurance will be of real help to take care of the enormous costs associated with the pet dental treatment.
Important aspects to be taken care before selecting a pet dental insurance:
The pet dental insurance policy should be in conjunction with the pet’s age, breed, where they live etc. The selection of a good veterinarian is also important to treat the pet. Pet dental insurance may be common to a dog and a cat, but for an exotic pet it may not be the case. Hence, the pet dental insurance policy that suits the exotic pet should be taken, as normal pet dental insurance is not meant for other exotic pets. The payout limits of the pet dental policy should be screened properly and the terms and conditions too need to be read with an eye on the details. Pet dental insurance policy with a yearly limit is good as they pay out every year whereas a “per condition limit” policy may cease for ongoing illnesses when a certain limit is reached as mentioned in the policy. The pet dental insurance should cover the costs of routine dental care as it self saves a lot of money. The emergency care too needs to be covered, as pets are more prone to accidents. Precaution is better than cure.
Reasons for opting pet dental insurance for the pets by their owners:
The pet dental insurance is very important as many of the pet owners treat them as part of their family. A discomfort to their pets can be very stressful to the pet owners and also the costs towards treating them. Pet dental insurance gives a peace of mind, as they are covered against even unexpected dental bills. During emergencies, best treatment can be got with great comfort. Both financial and emotional peace of mind is provided to the pet owner by the pet dental insurance policies. The pets can be free from bad breadth which will lead to other diseases if it is not taken care of can be prevented through regular checkups offered by the pet dental insurance plans.

Help answer the question about dental insurance
What exactly is dental insurance and how is it different from medical insurance?I'm sixteen and just got a job as a receptionist at a Dentist's office and I know I'm not going to get a strightforward and easy answer from digging around the internet so I wondered if anyone here could just give me a clear explanation as to what dental insurance is and how it's different from medical insurance. Thank you!

Actually, they are setting the stage for requiring everyone to buy a Chevy pickup to bail out GM.
Jesse: They aren't just taxing those who don't have care. Just about everyone who already has care is also going to be taxed one way or another.
If they tell you that you have to buy insurance what CAN'T they tell you that you have to buy?
Take the money it would cost you each month for the insurance and put it in a seperate savings account or a piggy bank. This will likely cover your dogs medical expenses. You should save anywhere from $10 – $30 a month. Some insurance plans can run as high as $50 a month. It will also depend upon the breed of dog.
Assuming no extractions or drilling, for basic vaccinations and dental I pay about $300-$500 a year for my small dog.
Of course, this doesn't include the extra $500 a year in random vet bills or heartworm meds.
Sorry but Wise1 has no idea what he's talking about. I work at a vet and we ALL brush our dog's teeth. And accidents do happen even with pets. They get into the garbage and get sick, they dart outside one day and get hit by a car, someone decides they don't like your dog and tries to poison her. My clinic actually treated a chihuahua that was attacked by a hawk (yes, a hawk). Her owner was walking her and the hawk tried to snatch the poor little thing. The only thing that saved her life was the harness and leash to owner used to walk her.
My clinic recommends VPI pet insurance. They're a good company and will cover lots of things. But most companies will only cover so much for dental cleanings. Also, most companies will not cover conditions that are considered a breed predisposition (like back problems in dachshunds, heart problems in cavaliers, etc..) They should cover annual care though. Things like vaccinations, heartworm preventatives, etc…
VCA is a big company; their primary interest is in making money, not caring lovingly for pets.
I would go to a locallly based vet and get a second opinion.
I went to VCA in Savannah once. Their rates for services were 30 to 40% higher than good old Dr. Marley who ran his own office with 2 assistants. I would definitely shop around and I wouldn't bother with pet insurance. If they will only pay $65 of a $700 bill, he insurance is not worth the money.
Good luck!
petsmart has a great pet insurance i had it for my own dog and they also do dental so go check it out

I know it is very confusing when shopping for pet insurance. There are too many information out there and cause a case of information overload.
No pet insurance are the same and you need to find one that tailors to your cat's need. You have to be careful when choosing because some insurance company place a low cap on their reimbursement even though you are paying for higher premiums. Some will have low deductibles but will not cover much illness or low coverage for accidents and diagnosis. Many insurance companies will not cover pre existing conditions.
I cannot recommend one that stood out from the rest because what my cat needs might be different from what you need.
However, there is a site with a lot of good and useful reviews on the insurance available that you can look into.

Some guidelines:-
How old is your pet? The best time to purchase a pet health insurance policy is when your pet is young. Most pet health problems happen in the last two years of your pet's life. So, the younger your pet is, the better
Is your breed prone to medical problems? While policy premiums are generally not based on breed, certain hereditary conditions are excluded.
For instance, Persian cats are prone to polycystic kidney disease (PKD). You can still buy pet insurance for your Persian; just don't be surprised if it fails to cover related issues (some pet insurance policies may cover this, so check with your provider to make sure before you buy).
Is your pet already sick? Most pet insurance providers won't cover pre-existing conditions. However, if you can prove your pet had a condition that has been cured, that may be covered.
Can you choose your own veterinarian? For many pet owners, vet choice is key, and for good reason. Some pet insurance companies require you to use veterinarians on their own network. Others don't. As always, check with your provider regarding your choice of veterinarian.
What is your pet's lifestyle? If your dog or cat spends most of his time outdoors, that will increase his/her risk of illness or injury.
What is covered? Many pet owners purchase pet health insurance policies to protect themselves from the high cost of future medical problems. Others want regular pet care such as annual physical exams and routine checkups and cleanings.
Just be advised that most standard pet insurance policies cover catastrophic accidents and illnesses. Routine vet visits tend to come as add-ons and/or riders.
What State do you Live In? If you are searching on the internet for pet health insurance, you need to check this. Just because a provider does business online doesn't mean it services your state.
Check The Insurance Company's Track Record
Every state in the U.S. has an insurance commissioner. If the insurance company you are considering has had legal/ethical issues that should cause you concern, the insurance commissioner's office in your state or province should know about it. Check with them before you buy.
