In the United States, most companies provide health insurance coverage for all of their employees. If a person is self-employed or if he works for a small company that does not have that option, then he has to consider buying individual health insurance for his health needs.

The worker pays an average of either $779 a year for an individual plan or $3,515 a year for a family plan, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. In order to calculate this average, it stands to reason that many workers are paying considerably more than this for their company health coverage.

In order to find the best insurance coverage for the cheapest price, the best thing you can do is get quotes from a number of different health insurance companies. There are non-profit sites that will do this for free if you answer a few questions about your household. After reviewing your answers, they will send a list of state approved companies that have policies that will meet your specific health needs. They, also, include the website and phone number for each company.

The total cost of a family health insurance plan in the United States is $13,500 for a year. Workers only pay a portion of that price. Because of the rise in price, small companies are paying less for insurance, while their workers are paying more. In some cases, it may be smarter for them to purchase their own individual health insurance.

One of the things that affect the validity of saving money on an individual plan instead of a company plan is the area that you live and work in. Folks in the area around New York City would most likely pay more for an individual policy, while workers living in the middle northern states would pay less.

It is important for a worker to consider several benefits that a company plan offers before he decides to change to an individual plan. There are several things that would not be included in an individual plan.

The insurance company that is carried by a private company is obligated to accept every employee for coverage regardless of his health needs. They cannot cancel an employee’s insurance if he becomes ill. The law allows an employee to purchase an 18 month extension on his health insurance if he is laid off.

The company is required by law to waive the waiting period on a new employee if he was covered by insurance in his other job for a longer period than the time of the waiting period. For an example, if an employee worked fifteen months for another company and was covered by their company insurance, and the waiting period at his new job is nine months, then the waiting period is canceled and his entire insurance coverage is effective immediately.

Don’t cancel your company insurance until you are sure that you have been accepted for the individual insurance plan that you applied for. Private insurers have a long list of reasons for refusing coverage, and you may fall within that list. It would not be unusual for a company to deny you coverage.

Comparing policies and quotes from various insurance companies is the wise way to go. Read over the policies, and if there is something you don’t understand, call them and ask about it. This is the only way you will be able to make a knowledgeable decision about buying individual health insurance.

Help answer the question about family health

Do you know of any good family health insurance plans for cheap?
I currently work in a hopital and pay only $200/month for insurance. I am pregnant with my 2nd child and thinking of cutting my hours at work to where I could no longer carry their insurance plan. We also own a small business, so my husband doesn't carry the insurance. I only have to work 20 hours a week to keep the insurance at my job, and it has awesome benifits, but I would love to be home after the 2nd baby is born. What do you think? Should I keep my insurance at work or any better ideas?

As you point out, the obvious problem with people who refuse to buy health insurance is that, almost always, the rest of us will be left paying for their care if they become ill, one way or another. We won't let them die at the hospital entrance so they will receive care. One solution is to fine them until they achieve compliance.

  8. I was actually impressed you know your politics and took the time to write a good statement/question! I can't agree more. I have never broken a bone, gone to the ER, etc. The only time I have used health insurance is for surgery when I was little and occasionally doctor visits for physicals and shots. I think is is EXTREMELY unfair to introduce nationalized health care! Politicians could care less about you since they are guaranteed a life time retirement regardless of their positions or beliefs! I strongly believe that making hard-working citizens pay for that lazy couch potatoes insurance is a sure-fire way to run the country into the ground. Why work more when you are just going to give it to the government? I live around poverty every day and the line to receive welfare I pass every morning on my way to school is unbelievable. These people do not want to work, so why should they GET anything? Standardizing health care is just one more freedom taken from us…

I want 2 go 2 India n bring home more children 2 join my 3 Children Ive got already. Where r all the Children? Y are they not being allowed 2 b adopted? Yet my heart breaks everytime I read about all the poor innocent baby girls being murdered just because they are baby girls! Yet there r soo many women whod die 2 become their mothers

  11. The Public Option and Medicare are both equally unconstitutional, as there is no authorization for such programs in the Constitution. If you wish for the government to adopt such programs, there is an amendment process for the Constitution.

  13. adoption is incredibly expensive. if they made it more affordable, more loving couples would be interested in adopting. I’m trying to adopt internationally, I’ve known many couples who’ve had to save up money 15+ years. It is quite hard.

  16. How can we not afford it? People w/o insurance use the ER like a doctor's office, and that has driven many hospitals to the brink of bankruptcy. If we focus more on preventive care, there will be less medical care required. We spend a LOT on the last six months of life, where many other countries put their money in hospice care that doesn't require high-tech and maintains a patient's dignity. Your numbers do not take many things into account.

  17. Business does not get a tax credit for health insurance purchased. They do get the deduction for their expenses. People are not taxed on their health insurance benefits already. This premise is based on so many incorrect facts.

  18. I have always wanted to adopt a little girl from India, I am 24 and within the next 3-6 years I will adopt her. So many children neep our help!! Heck I might adopt a boy and a girl!
